Preparing for your Interview - some helpful tips and techniques

Here’s an old blog we wrote about some interview techniques that are still worth bearing in mind:-.


So, your CV has got you through and now you’ve been called for interview – congratulations, you’ve passed stage 1!


However, Interviews are crucial and lack of preparation could lead to the dreaded call – “Sorry, you haven’t been successful on this occasion, but thank you for your interest”.


Everybody has been here at some point in their career but sometimes, the following tips could make the crucial difference:-

1. Think about your current or most recent job. Can you describe the following:-

  • What contributions you made to your job?
  • Projects have you worked on (what value, timescale, savings, results?)
  • The main responsibilities of your job? Or alternatively you may be asked to describe a typical day…
  • Just as important is your knowledge of your hopeful future job , so make sure you understand the job you are being interviewed for.
  • What are the objectives for the next 6 weeks, 6 months?
  • What specific skills are required to do the job successfully?
  • Do you think you could do the role successfully?
  • Working relationships?


2. What are the questions you can expect:-

  • Why do you want to change job?
  • What do you like about the job you are being interviewed for?
  • What are your own goals over the next 2 – 3 years?
  • What are your strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • What do you consider your strengths for this position?
  • What do you know about the company?


3. Would you be able to give examples that demonstrate your competency in each of the following:-

  • Your technical or functional requirements for this role
  • Planning and organisational skills
  • Problem solving ability
  • Communication skills

It’s guaranteed that you will then be asked have you any questions – how do you reply? It’s always better to ask one or two – some you may consider asking are:-

  • How will success in the role be measured?
  • What is the typical work week? Is overtime expected?
  • What are the prospects for growth and advancement?
  • Are there any examples?
